Because in that entire movie, if you think about it, the "Clementine" we see isn't actually Clementine. It's about ourselves and how we view ourselves. So the title, I think, is saying "spots" are the memories we repress, change unknowingly, or represent differently, and that "eternal sunshine" or happiness is only available in this messed up representation of the memories, and that it's hard to judge exactly how we would feel either way.Īnd really, it isn't even about the other characters, or people, or relationships. And effectively destroys its own idea of what happiness is supposed to be. It seems we think if we acted differently, things would end up more favorable. Not totally the same, but with a different outlook, much how Joel's character changed to a spontaneous guy and Clem's character changed from at the end. So it seems, that, what we want, isn't to learn from the mistakes for us to feel happiness - it's to experience them again - but experience them differently. Is anything different? Do our memories change as they go longer, and do they get stronger or warped when we associate them, just as the main character tried to associate conflicting memories in order for the memory procedure to stop working when he decided half-way that it was a bad idea? And Joel is never impulsive, until in this part, he is.

And in the end, they try it all over again. Are they, though? Is that just under the perspective of that time? Aren't the other memories being erased as you go and things happen for a reason? So, the only thing happy about it is pretending the mistakes didn't exist? The original script had the main girl erase him 15 times. In the movie, they go back in time, and as they go back, you start to realize how great of a couple they are. is just an extended metaphor for how we treat our memories. But even the characters who've gone through the same problems that haven't erased their memory are without happiness.

The characters that go through with memory erasing are not happy, they keep repeating their same mistakes and find happiness in there as they go - essentially saying the most happiness is the youngest back you go and it is inherent in your mistakes and problems before you grow old, restless, and full of mistakes that are essentially the way "it must be". The theme is interesting is that there is no true eternal happiness.
